As many of you know, one of the most important halachot of Purim is matanot l’evyonim, or giving gifts to the poor. Shtibl will be reprising its annual trip to the beach with sandwiches, first aid and toiletries on Purim day (Sunday, Feb. 24th). By Wednesday please let Andrea Hodos (membership@shtibl.com) know which of the following ways you would like to participate.

Would you make a donation in any amount to help provide food, first aid and toiletries? You can pay via the PayPal button at the end of this post or contact Andrea with the amount you would like to contribute and then send your check to Shtibl Minyan c/o Caryn Espo, 12400 Wilshire Blvd. #1300, Los Angeles, CA 90025. Making a donation is a great way to fulfill the obligation, because we will be handing the food and items to people on Purim day, itself. Suggested donations are $18/$36/$72 – the more funds we have, the more extensive the packs can be.

Would you like to help with shopping?

Would you like to help us assemble the packs? Time and place TBD – but assembly will be either Wed. 2/20 or Thursday 2/21 in the evening – if you want to help, please let us know your availability

Will you help coordinate sandwich making in the back room on Purim night?

Would you join us Purim day in the late morning (11:00 – to put sandwiches in the bags) or at the Pier (12:00) to hand out food and toiletries? Since Purim is Sunday, it’s a great year for those of you who don’t usually have the day off to join us! You will be happy you did! We had so many packs last year that we couldn’t hand them out all in the same location, we are going to send two teams this year — so it would be great to have you on board!

We look forward to hearing from you, soon!

February 26 update: We removed the PayPal button now that Matanot L’evyonim has passed. Thank you, everyone, for your contributions!

The potluck starts at 6:30 PM so if you’d like, light your Hanukkah candles before 4:27 PM, daven when, where, and how you will, and see you for food, community, and mysterious blue drinks!

Hanukkah Drink Update!

(From Julie Weise)

While 2010’s bright blue chanukahtini was well received, changing times call for new beverages. Tomorrow night you may therefore enjoy a Nesgadoltini.

The color of the flame that burned for eight nights, this persimmon-based vodka beverage is sweet, tangy, and garnished with some bright blue Jewberries to keep us in touch with our roots. With all non-vodka ingredients purchased at the La Cienega farmers market, the Nesgadoltini is even local and organic.

May your Chanukah flames burn bright, pointing the way towards tomorrow’s Nesgadoltini.

This is a long night, full of singing, dancing, eating and drinking. Torah party. But after the party, there’s also the after-party, which means we will need help in cleaning up…

What Do We Need for Simchat Torah Eve?

Food and drinks: this is for EVERYONE who’s coming

Last name A–M: snacks sweet, savory, and spicy (this can include fruit and veggies along with the usual munchies
Last name N–R: alcoholic drinks
Last name S–Z: non-alcoholic drinks

Volunteering for High Holiday 2012 Services

As always, we will not be selling tickets to our services. Rather, we ask that everyone contributes to the community experience of the holidays. For each day that you will be at Shtibl, please volunteer for something. There are many ways to volunteer, all of which are important and vital to creating a special atmosphere for our davening.

For information on the different ways to help out please email the coordinators, Ronni Hendel and Michelle Fellner, at highholidays@shtibl.com.

Shtibl Duchaning Subcommittee Meeting Proposal

After a series of meetings since last spring, and an informal opinion poll of the Shtibl email list, the Shtibl Duchaning Subcommittee has concluded:

There is significant interest among the Shtibl membership in experimenting with adding duchaning to Shtibl holiday Musaf services, as is the traditional custom elsewhere.

The three approaches with the greatest support at Shtibl are:

Liturgically traditional duchaning, but including both kohanim and kohanot/b’not kohanim (daughters of kohanim) as “blessers” (with male and female Levites washing)

“Communal” or fully participatory duchaning, in which members of the community bless one another, with liturgical variation as needed, and “choreography” still TBA, perhaps on the model of the Aquarian Minyan (Berkeley, CA) or Havurat Shalom (Somerville, MA)

No duchaning at all. (That is, a deliberate choice to continue services as before, without adding this ritual.)

On this basis, the Shtibl Duchaning Subcommittee proposes as follows:

On each of Rosh Hashanah (1st day), Rosh Hashanah (2nd day), and Yom Kippur, one of approaches A, B, and C will be employed. Thus, those in attendance on all 3 days will experience all three approaches.

On each of Sukkot (1st day), Sukkot (2nd day), and Shemini Atzeret, one of approaches A, B, and C will be employed. This will be an opportunity to experience each for a second time if desired; or for the first time for those who may have spent one or another of Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur elsewhere.

The precise determination of which approach shall be employed on which day will be worked out by the Subcommittee with the prayer leader leading the service in question, and the membership will be notified in advance of the agreed-upon schedule.

After the holidays are over, the Subcommittee will meet again to assess this duchaning experience and to consider what will happen at the Shtibl in the future.
